One Thing ワン・ダイレクション (One Direction)

ヴィデオの中で嬉しそうに叫んでる女の子達を見ていると，こちらも嬉しくなってきます。彼女達にとって，おそらくOne Directionは神にも等しい存在なんでしょう。 One Directionの話をして，彼らの曲を聴き，そして彼らの夢を見る。こういう子達を見ると思い出す友達がいます。何年も前のことですが，かのBackstreet Boysの大ファンで，一生彼らについていくと断言してました。
それはともかく，誰かに夢中になる（大抵はアイドルですが）というのは，10代前半の子にのみ許された特権だと思います。10代の頃には，そんなことには興味がなく，そういう経験がなかったのですが，今は自分があのなかの一人だったらと思います。さぞかし楽しいでしょうね。
Watching girls screaming happily in the video makes me happy, too.  For these girls, One Direction probably rivals God.  They speak the band, listen to the song and dream of these boys.  These girls remind me of one of my friends who was a huge fan of Backstreet Boys years ago.  She swore she would be loyal to them forever.
Well, having a crush on someone (mostly on pop idols) is, I believe, one of the prerogatives of teenagers.   Not having been interested in pop idols nor enjoyed the prerogative at all in my teens, now I wish I were one of them.  I'm sure it would be fun.

Love Is A Losing Game エイミー・ワインハウス(Amy Winehouse)

この曲にすっかりハマってしまいました。Love is a losing game （直訳すると「恋は負け戦」なんですがこれじゃあんまり）。全く同感です。２月14日はヴァレンタインデーでした。実はこの日のために「ハッピーな」曲ばかりを投稿しようとしたものの，思いのほか難航。「ハッピーじゃない曲」なら，苦も無く山のように集まったと思うのですが，ヴァレンタインデーには不向き。結局，3曲しか投稿できませんでした。
ロシアの作家，トルストイ曰く「幸せな家族はみな似ているが，不幸な家族の形はそれぞれ違っている」とか。これは曲にも言えることで「ハッピーなラヴソングはみな似ているが，そうでないラヴソングはそれぞれ違っている」ということでしょう。
Amy Winehouseは，昨年2011年の７月23日に亡くなりました。このような優れたソングライターを失ったことが悔やまれます。
I was completely hooked up to the song.  "Love is a losing game." Yes, totally.  February 14th was Valentine's Day.  To celebrate the day, I tried to post as many a happy love song as possible but it was not very easy.  I could have found tons of unhappy love songs including breakup ones without effort but they are not for Valentine's Day.  All I could post were only three love songs.  
A Russian writer, Leo Tolstoy said, "Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way."  This also the case with songs.  Happy love songs are all alike; every unhappy songs is unhappy in its own way."
Amy Winehouse passed away on 23 July, 2011.  It's a shame we have lost such a great songwriter.

Titanium デイヴィッド・ゲッタ(David Guetta ft. Sia)

この曲を歌っているSiaですが，声は海外ドラマ「グリー」でMercedes Jonesを演じているAmber Rileyに，歌い方はAdeleに似ています。
歌詞の中では，「タイタニウム（＝チタン）」という言葉は，苦難に負けない強い人間のメタファー（暗喩）として使われていますが，ヴィデオの中では，文字通り超人的な能力を持った人間を表しています。銃弾さえ跳ね返す生まれつきの力を持っているため，彼には誰も手が出せません。
正直なところ，ヴィデオの主人公の男の子が持っている「力」こそ，私が子どもの頃欲しくてたまらなかったものでした。妄想癖のある子どもだったので，目覚めたら超能力が授かっていますようにと祈りながら寝てました。
さすがにもうそんなことは信じていませんが，それが信じられたあの頃が懐かしい。せめて自分もチタンのように強い人間になりたいと思うのですが，実際の自分はアルミニウム。腐食には強いものの，密度が低くてすぐに曲がるところが情けない。
The voice of Sia reminds me of Amber Riley who portrays Mercedes Jones in a TV show Glee and the style of her singing of Adele.
I think "titanium" in the lyrics is a metaphor for a strong person who does not succumb or surrender easily.  In the music video below, however, the word is described rather literally.  A person with a super power.  Nothing can hurt him because he has some super natural "bullet proof" power.
Honestly, the power the protagonist in the video enjoys (or hates) is exactly what I craved when I was a kid.  Another kid spending time in fantasy.  I used to go to bed wishing to have been given such a miraculous power the next day.
Now I'm too old to believe in such a thing and miss the time when I could believe in a magic.  I wish I could be titanium like the person in the lyric but actually I'm aluminium.  Corrosion resistant but low density and stiffness.

ここで和訳する曲には，大きく分けて３つのタイプがあります。(1) 歌詞が面白い曲（笑える，メタファーを多用している，裏の意味がある，深い，ユーモアがある），(2)その時代や時期を反映する曲，(3)好きなアーティストの作品。この曲Dominoは最後のタイプですね。無論ここで取り上げる曲がすべてこの３タイプに分類できるわけではありませんが。
この曲は，歌詞という点で言えば，さほど面白みのある曲とは言えません。この曲の魅力は，ひとえに歌っているJessie J.にあるでしょう。ここはひとつ，椅子やソファでくつろぎながら，彼女の素晴らしい歌とパフォーマンスをご覧ください。

Songs I translate into Japanese here basically consist of three types.  (1) songs with interesting lyrics (with a wicked sense of humor, full of metaphorical expression, full of connotation and insightful), (2) songs of the time and (3) songs which my favorite artists sing/write.  Domino is the third.  Not all songs posted here fall in these three types, though.
This song is not very interesting nor insightful in terms of the lyrics.  What makes it awesome is the singer, Jessie J herself.  Just lean back in a chair/couch and enjoy her amazing vocal skill and performance.

Fix The World Up For You ジェイムズ・モリソン(James Morrison)

歌詞に出てくるYOUは一体誰のことでしょうか？主人公の彼女？一番説得力がありますが真相は違います。聞くところによると，James Morrison本人が，この曲を娘のために書いたとインタヴューで語ったそうです。 つまりこの曲は父親が娘に贈った曲。大変いい話ですが，ふと脳裏をよぎるのが，前回彼のLove Is Hardの時に言った「将来，イギリス版佐々木光太郎になりそうで怖い」というアレ。http://oyogetaiyakukun.blogspot.com/2012/02/love-is-hard-james-morrison.html

Who do you think the second person in the lyrics?  The first person's girlfriend?  Yes it's most likely but actually it's not.  I heard that James Morrison said in an interview that he wrote this for his daughter.  So this is a song from a father to his daughter.  It's very sweet but it reminds me of what I said on my post of "Love Is Hard".  Yes, that doting and overprotecting father thing.  Could it be?

余談ですが，和訳をしていて日本語の限界というものをよく感じます。この曲もYOUを「お前」，Iを「お父さん」と訳すべきなのでしょうが，そうすると歌詞世界が著しく限定されます。一方，英語であれば，YOUが誰であるかは聴いた人が決めればいいことです。
無論，日本語なりのメリットもあります。以前に投稿したTristan Prettyman ft. Jason MrazのShy That Wayは，日本語の持つ特性のおかげで，人称名詞を一切使わなくても，どこの歌詞を誰が歌っているか，曲を聴かなくてもわかるようになっています。

（追記）今までJames MorrisonのWikipediaにあったPersonal Lifeの記述がなくなっていました。そこには，2008年に恋人Gillとの間に娘（Elsie）が生れたことが書いてあったのですが，現在ではその記述はありません。ただし，父親となった旨の記述はそのまま残っています。

The Pretender フー・ファイターズ(Foo Fighters)

この歌詞は様々な解釈が可能です。それゆえ，恋愛関係を歌ったものであるとする人もいれば，「権威」への抵抗を歌ったものだとする人もあります。ここでいう権威とは，上司かもしれませんし，政府や財界などかもしれません。インタヴューでDave Grohl自身が語ったところによると，この曲は政治的な色合いをもったものだとか。ただ，歌詞の内容については詳しく語らなかったので正確なところは不明です。
いずれにしろ，ミュージック・ヴィデオが素晴らしい。わかりやすい歌詞ではありませんが，これを見れば曲の持つメッセージが掴めるように思います。
The lyrics of this song are open to various interpretations.  Some say it's about a romantic relationship and others say it's rather a protest to a higher authority.  It could be a boss, could be the government or the establishment.  Dave Grohl himself is said to have alluded in an interview that the song is somehow political, stopping short of explaining the lyrics.
The music video is awesome.  I think it allows us to understand the message the song carries without difficulty despite its equivocal lyrics.

大方の予想通り，Ed SheeranはThe BRIT Awardsにおいて，British Male Solo ActとBritish Breakthrough Actの２つを受賞しました。おめでとう，エド！
Ed Sheeran本人がヴィデオのなかで演じている主人公には，どうやら「カラダだけの関係」の彼女がいたようです。最初は彼もその関係を楽しんでいたのですが，やがてそんな関係が思うほどいいものではなかったと気づきます。彼はこれから彼女に本当の気持ちを打ち明けようとしているところ。これはいわばAdeleのOne and Onlyの男性版ですね。

今回の投稿はエロ全開かも。露骨な表現があるわけではないのですが，歌詞のあちこちにエロのエッセンスが散りばめられております。
常々思うのですが，車あるいはドライヴをセックスの比喩として使うというのは，ロック界のお約束なんでしょうか。というのも，歌詞の中で車が登場する部分を見て，故忌野清志郎の「雨上がりの夜空に」（ＲＣサクセション）を思い出したから。
聞くところによると，ステージでの彼の動きは，ミック・ジャガーそっくりらしい。言いかえれば，ジャガーのような動きをしてた（moves like Jagger）わけですね。これはただの偶然なのかそれとも意図してやってたことなんでしょうか？

I Feel Better ゴーティエ(Gotye)

カナダのインディーズバンドWalk Off The Earthがカヴァーしたことで，Gotyeと彼のSomebody That I Used To Knowは日本でもかなり有名になりました。やっと彼が正当に評価された感じです。この地味なブログもそのおこぼれに与った形で，ビュー数が飛躍的に増えました。彼には感謝してもしきれません。
この曲は，Gotyeの2011年のアルバムMaking Mirrorsからのもの。朝にピッタリのとても好きな曲です。下のアルバムジャケットは，Gotyeの父親が描いた絵をもとに，フォトショップで加工して作ったものだそうです。
Covered by a Canadian indie band, Walk Off The Earth, Gotye and his "Somebody That I Used To Know" became almost household name in Japan, too.  I'm very happy for him that he has got what he deserves.  That cover became viral, which eventually brought far more views than I had expected to this plain blog.   I cannot thank him enough.
This song is from his 2011 album Making Mirrors.  Perfect for morning.  I love it.  The album jacket cover you see below is designed based on his father's own painting.

この曲を選んだ理由はすでにお察しかと存じます。オバマ大統領です。この曲を聴いて一番驚いたのはその歌詞でした。いわゆる「決まり文句」のオンパレード。ただ，誤解しないでいただきたい。それが退屈だとか駄作だとか言いたいわけではありません。逆に少し羨ましくなりました。みんながこの曲を純粋に楽しめるほど，当時はなにもかもが今よりずっとシンプルだったから。

それなのに私ときたら，Over numbers, unencumbered numbered words, Hundreds of pages, pages, pages for wordsという箇所を聴いて，離婚手続きの書類のことだと確信してしまいました。それが大きな間違いであったとわかった今，自分がかなりイヤになってます。これだから法学部生は嫌われるんですね。

この曲はJames Morrisonが以前一緒に住んでいた男性について書いた曲だそうです。彼は薬物依存症でそこから抜け出せなかったとか。私はこの曲を聴いた時，すぐにこれはJames Morrison本人の父親について歌ったものではないかと思ったのですが，こちらが真相らしい。結果的に私の読みは外れていたわけですが，それでも単なる男女関係の歌ではない気はしていました。
アルコール依存症と同様，薬物依存も，克服するには，プロの指導と家族のサポートが非常に重要らしい。この曲の主人公は果たして「あともう一回だけ」チャンスをもらえたんでしょうか。          
I heard this is about a guy whom James Morrison used to live with.  He had a drug problem.  When I first listened to the song, I was instantly convinced that this was about James Morrison's father, battling alcohol addiction.  I was wrong but I had a hunch that it's anything but a simple song about a relationship.  Like alcohol addiction, it's said that professional help and the involvement of family members are very important to deal with and overcome drug problem.  Would the protagonist in the lyrics get his "one last chance"?

失恋の履歴について，Michael BubléはHaven't Met You Yetのミュージックヴィデオのなかで「これまで何度も経験あるからもう回数もいちいち覚えてないよ」と歌っております。個人的に大変よくわかります。
ところが，世の中にはこれとは全く別のタイプの存在するようで，こういう方々は，日記を綴るが如く，自分の恋愛遍歴をきっちり記録（記憶）なさるようです。見たところJames Bluntはこのタイプ。
彼の曲を聴き，周辺情報を得るにつれ，彼が曲を書くことで記憶を整理しているような気がしてきました。どうも，あのGoodbye My Loverを元彼女に，You're Beautifulを（多分）別の元彼に書いてるようです。この曲もまた別の元彼女に宛てたものかも。

Michael Bublé portrayed a man in his music video "Haven't Met You Yet", singing he's broken his heart so many times, he stopped keeping track.  Well, I can relate to this.  
However, there's another kind of person who does keep track of his/her love, like keeping a diary/journal.  I guess James Blunt is that kind.    
Listening to his songs and learning about him, now it seems to me that he keeps his memory by writing a song about it.  He wrote "Goodbye My Lover" for his ex-girlfriend and "You're Beautiful"for (maybe) another ex..  So this song might be written for another ex.

皆の者よく聞け！ヴァレンタインデーは終わったのだ！・・・いや「選ばれし者」はともかく，そうでない人間にとって，立て続けに王道ラヴソングを聴き続けるというのはなかなかにツライものがあります。そこで今度は「別れの曲(breakup）」ばかりを集めてみました。
この曲Tainted Loveは，1965年のGloria Jonesが歌ったものですが，後の1981年に英国のシンセ・デュオSoft Cellが出したカヴァーで有名になりました。以降，Marilyn MansonやThe Pussycat Dolls といった多くのアーティストがこの曲をカヴァーしています。この曲はダンス用の12インチシングルなので，中盤でThe SupremesのWhere Did Our Love Goに変わります。

You Need Me, I Don't Need You エド・シーラン(Ed Sheeran)

まず言っておきたいのですが，2番目のヴィデオで（おそらく）手話をしている人物はEd Sheeranではありません。確かに，ヴィデオには繰り返しEd Sheeran本人が登場するのですが，明滅するシルエット姿です。
The A TeamやLego Houseだけしか知らない人が，この曲を聴くと，驚いたり，あるいは多少たじろいだりするかもしれません。私も驚きましたが，こちらが本来の彼なのかも。攻撃的でちょっと問題発言っぽい歌詞ではありますが，それでも圧倒的な迫力があります。「多才」という形容詞は彼のためにあるのかもしれません。
ところで，ヴィデオで手話をしているこの人物，故Michael Jacksonの10代の頃を思い出します。曲に合わせて手話を行うやり方も実に巧みでクールです。
正直なところ，個人的には前述の2曲よりもこちらの方が断然好みですね。

First of all, the person presumably using sign language in the second video is NOT Ed Sheeran.  Yes, the singer repeatedly appears in the video but only for a moment and in a silhouette, like a flicker.  Knowing his song and covers like, The A Team or Make You Feel My Love, you will be surprised with (or flinched at maybe) this song.  In fact, I was but this seems to be his primary self.  So aggressive and provoking but still overwhelming.  I think an adjective "versatile" is for him.
By the way, the guy performing sign language reminds me of late Michael Jackson in his teens.  I was impressed with his way to use sign language to the music.  So cool.
Honestly, I love this far  more than these two songs above.

この曲を教えてくださったのはこのブログの読者の方。大正解でした。歌詞を読みながら曲を聴いていたのですが，最後は涙をこらえきれない状態に。これまで聴いた中でも，間違いなくトップに入る美しい曲です。心底美しい。聴き終わった後も，あまりの衝撃と感動でしばらく何もできませんでした。
こういう曲に出会うときがあります。ヴィデオから入ってくるのは音声情報だけなのに，曲を聴いていたあの６分間ほどは，この私も確かに主人公のいる小さな病室にいたと思います。
思うにこれが本当のラヴソング。今日ヴァレンタインデーにふさわしい曲です。
One of my followers suggested I should try this.  I think she's absolutely right.  As I listened to the tune and read the lyrics, I found myself fighting back tears.  This is definitely one of the most beautiful songs I've ever known.  Desperately beautiful.  After listening to it, I was so touched and awe-struck that I couldn't even move.
Some songs give me shivers.  No visual data was available and all I got from the video posted here was audio (music).  Still I swear I was in a small room in a hospital where the protagonist was in, for about 6 minutes.

As far as I can remember reading somewhere, this song is based on Ben's friend (in real life) Sarah. She was walking along with her partner one day when she suddenly burst into tears for apparently no reason. Her parent asked her what was up, and she said she'd just realised that some day, one of them is going to have to watch the other one die, hence how Sarah said "love is watching someone die".

明日はヴァレンタインデーなのでウェディング向きの曲を取り上げました。実際，この曲を使った結婚式のヴィデオがYouTubeで見られます。
この曲を歌っているCraig Davidは，彼がアルバムThe Story Goesをリリースした2005年当時，間違いなく将来を約束された一人でした。恵まれたルックスと声（歌唱力も含めて）。全てが揃っていたと思います。最近，あまり評価されていないのが残念で仕方ありません。この曲を含め，当時の彼のヒット曲が懐かしい。あのJustin Bieberも彼のファンなんですよ。頑張れ！Craig David.

Tomorrow is St. Valentine's Day.  This makes a perfect wedding song.  Actually, you can watch some wedding videos with it on YouTube.
I think Craig David was definitely one of the brightest stars when he released his album "The Story Goes" in 2005.  He had everything.  Great looks and amazing voice.  It's a shame that he doesn't get the credit he deserves these days.  I miss his old hits like this.  Justin Bieber was (I hope he still is) a big fan of him.  God bless you, Craig David.

Lego House エド・シーラン(Ed Sheeran)

正統派ラヴソングでロマンチックな雰囲気を楽しみたい方は，下のヴィデオはないものとお考えください。ヴィデオでは，Ed Sheeranと自分を同一人物であると思い込んだ男性が主人公だからです。こう聞くとやや気味の悪い感じがしますが，なぜか私はこの人物の考えていることや感じていることがわかるような気がします。確かに彼とは違い，現実逃避はしていませんが，子どもの頃は自分以外の人間になりきっていた記憶があります。自分なら決してこうはならなかったとは言い切れません。
ところで，ヴィデオでは主人公をRupert Grintが実に上手く演じています。ただ意外なほど背が高くなかったのに驚きました。ハリー・ポッターの映画では，もっと大きく見えていたんですけどね。
If you are a romantic person, just ignore the music video below.  It depicts a guy obsessed with an idea that Ed Sheeran and himself are identical.  It sounds bit creepy but I think I somehow understand what he thinks and feels.  It's true that he is living in denial and I'm not but I used to play acting someone else when I was a kid.  Who can say that I would have never been that way?
Rupert Grint is portraying the guy in the video and I think he is an awesome actor.  I was surprised to find he is not very tall (I thought he was).  He looks taller in Harry Potter movies.

The Pieces Don't Fit Anymoreの回についたコメント，思えばあれが最初のコメントでした。返信では冷静を装っていたものの，内心は有頂天。それまでは，AdeleやJessie Jと共に，単に好きなアーティストその他大勢の一人に過ぎなかったJames Morrisonですが，以来，私のオススメアーティストになりました。あのコメントで世界が変わったわけですね。
この曲，タイトルがやや紛らわしい。ネイティヴでない人間には，一見すると失恋の曲に思えます。歌詞を見るまで，実は私もそう思っていました。しかし，同様にお考えの皆様お待ちください。ハンカチは不要です。主人公は失恋してません。

火曜日2月14日はヴァレンタイン・デー。少し早めですが，全国のJames Morrisonファンの皆様へ。
The comment on "The Pieces Don't Fit Anymore" was the first one I got here.  I tried to sound cool in answering it but actually I was elated inside.  Yes, James Morrison was my favorite artist but just one among many including Adele and Jessie J.  The comment  changed everything.  Now he is my "Special".
Anyway, the song title is a bit misleading for the nonnatives.  I had believed the protagonist was the broken-hearted until I read the lyrics.  So those who think this way, save your tears.  I tell you, no, he isn't at all.

簡単ですが訳をつけておきます。

今週はラヴソングをかなり訳してきたので，実のところやや食傷気味。そこで気分転換に多少目先の変わったものを訳してみました。この曲，普通の破局ソングのように思えますが，ネットに次のようなコメントが：

この曲のことは知ってる。彼(David Guetta)が昔のクラブシーンを語ってたことがあったんだけど，当時は，愛・平和・敬意・団結なんてもんがクラブに溢れてたって言ってたよ。だけどそんなのはもう昔の話で，今のクラブで話題になってんのは，虚栄心とセックスだけ。この曲は「なんで昔みたいにやれないんだ。前はクラブに溢れてたあの愛（思いやり）はどこにいったんだよ」？ってことらしい。

このコメントが本当なら，この曲は思った以上に深い。そうだと嬉しいですね。

This song seems to be a simple breakup song but I found the comment on the web :

I know this one. He is speaking about the old rave scene, where the scene was about peace, love, unity, and respect. But those principals are long gone and its all in the club scene now, where the only thing that matters is vanity and sex. This song means, "Why keep trying to hold on to the old scene?
