It's widely believed that 'the house of the rising sun' represents a brothel once existed in New Orleans. In the song originally recorded by Alan Lomax, a folk music historian in 1937, the narrator was lamenting that the House of the Rising Sun ruined her life in the present tense. Animals changed that to make the song more radio friendly.

この「朝日の当たる家」が何であるかについては，リード文で述べた説以外にも，女子刑務所とする説があります。
大変有名な曲で，数多のアーティストがカヴァーしているのですが，歌詞にはさほど注意を払ってこなかったため，暗めの曲調であることは知っていたものの「朝日のあたる家」というタイトルに騙されて，爽やかな内容なのではないかと漠然と考えていました。
James BluntのYou're BeautifulやRihanna先輩のTake A Bowを披露宴でかけてしまうといった類のわかりやすい失敗をこの曲でやらかしてしまうかどうかは定かではありませんが，何かの機会に曲を選ぶ折には，歌詞の内容をおろそかにせぬよう心がけたいと思います。
